Metal monument created for the 'FREUDE by BMW' brand store.
A high-difficulty twisted shape dynamically utilizing the open stairwell. Mirror-polished panels reflect enchanting light patterns onto the walls.
The back panels of the monument are finished with a unique black-stain coating on steel.
■Creation of Decorative Monument for a Car Brand Store
The German automobile manufacturer BMW’s brand store ‘FREUDE by BMW’ opened in a corner of Azabudai Hills. In addition to showcasing their latest models, it includes restaurants and a variety of brand experiences designed to embody “FREUDE,” or “joy.”
Inside the store, an art piece called “THE PORTAL” is installed in the stairwell, inviting visitors to explore the brand’s philosophy. Designed to resemble BMW’s iconic body lines, known as “Flame Surfacing,” it also evokes a connection to the architecture of the large experiential facility “BMW Welt” in Munich, Germany. KIKUKAWA took on the challenge of fabricating this highly complex and aesthetically pleasing decorative metalwork.
■Thin Panel Construction that Achieves Complex Shapes
The monument stands approximately 8.8 meters tall, extending from the first floor to the ceiling of the second floor, featuring a curved shape that widens at both the top and bottom and includes twists, creating a complex design. The main challenge in this project was how to realize this smooth shape in metal.
Through 3D data modeling, we thoroughly explored feasible production and installation methods within the required deadline. Ultimately, we proposed a construction method where the framework composed of supports and ribs constrains the geometry of the thin cladding panels. This innovative approach, distinct from standard paneling methods, enabled us to bring an unprecedented design to life by embracing flexible thinking beyond conventional techniques.

■Mirror-Polished Prism Effect Utilizing Special Processing
The front-facing cladding panels are made from mirror-polished stainless steel, with fine vertical and horizontal lines etched through special processing to create a prism effect that adds elegance to the space. We carefully adjusted the line positions to harmonize with the expanding form of the monument, ensuring meticulous attention to beauty in every detail.
The reverse side panels are finished with a unique black-stain coating on steel, using a chemical treatment to achieve a deep, rich black distinct from regular black paint.
After multiple samples and mockups, final product inspections were conducted with representatives from the brand. Throughout the process, we focused on continuous improvements to ensure the quality befitting the brand concept.

■Exploring New Potential in Decorative Metalwork
In addition to achieving the aesthetics, the project required a practical approach that considered factors such as structural strength and production/installation efficiency. Leveraging our expertise, we generated new ideas and methods, leading to the successful completion of this project. KIKUKAWA received high praise for our ability to transform imagery into metal form. This new store which could potentially serve as a model case for future BMW brand store interiors, represents an exciting step for us in pushing the boundaries of decorative metalwork in spatial expression.
